White Space Art Asia | [EXHIBITION] Beyond the Brush: Sixty Years On at White Space Art

White Space Art Asia is proud to present ‘Beyond the Brush: Sixty Years On’, a group show featuring second-generation Singapore Nanyang artists. 

Featuring artists Ang Ah Tee, Koeh Sia Yong, and Tan Choh Tee, the exhibition invites you to witness a reunion of Impressionist masters in the Singaporean artistic canon. With works that journey through heritage and history, come and uncover the footprints of their legacies from the past to present.

‘Beyond the Brush: Sixty Years On’ will also stage an exclusive video installation interviewing the artists over a hearty meal of steamboat. Experience this reunion firsthand as they get together to reminiscence on and revisit the past sixty years of their career and life as professional artists in Singapore.

ABOUT ANG AH TEE

Born in 1943, Singapore artist and Cultural Medallion winner Ang Ah Tee’s acclaimed oeuvre of striking landscapes has been widely sought after regionally and internationally, marked by his distinctive style of palette knife technique. From his initial works of the iconic Chinatown and Singapore River, Ang has continued to find inspiration in other continental cities and their landmarks.

His widely decorated career has seen the artist with nine solo exhibitions under his belt, international shows, as well as receiving the ‘National Day Art Award’ by the Ministry of Culture, Singapore.

ABOUT KOEH SIA YONG

Second generation Nanyang artist Koeh Sia Yong’s long lineage of works from past to present has been notably prolific in the Singapore art scene. From this exhibition is an exclusive selection of Koeh’s oil scenes of his East Asia travels, as well as still works from his studio. Within his works is a lens into the artistry of Singapore second-generation Nanyang artists, charting the globalization of a growing population from the 1950s to present. 

Koeh has gone on to have a permanent museum fixture under his name, ‘Koeh Sia Yong Art Museum’, as well as shown in several international and domestic exhibitions and awarded with the prestigious ‘Patron of the Arts Award’ from National Arts Council Singapore.

ABOUT TAN CHOH TEE

Prominent Singapore artist and Cultural Medallion winner Tan Choh Tee’s storied career began in the 1950s, following his enrollment in the Nanyang Academy of Arts (NAFA). Across his rich portfolio were iconic scenes of the fast-developing Chinatown, Trengganu Street, before going on international journeys to capture the local and cultural milieu of Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Within his work is a microcosm of the community’s spirit and identity, captured in the Impressionistic brushstrokes that characterized the Nanyang school of art.

Tan has continued to exhibit internationally and domestically, along with several awards from prestigious institutions in Singapore and Korea.
