Artist Spotlight: A Postmodern Reimagination of Chinese Landscapes – Shen Zi Yao’s Autumn Collection

Shen Zi Yao is from a younger, post-80s generation of ink artists who live at the heart of today’s debate about the direction of Chinese art. He exemplifies an emerging trend of Modern Ink artists who seek to capture the essential atmosphere and poetry of Chinese ink but are not constrained by the sacred cows of traditions in style, composition, subject and technique passed down by their predecessors. We see Modern Ink to be an important development in the future of Chinese contemporary art, combining traditional Chinese culture with a drive for new visuals.

In his latest autumn collection, Shen Zi Yao draws his inspiration largely from his numerous escapes into the wild, mystical forests around the world. Dense foliage and dappled lights dance across his landscapes, changing his once bright, shimmering forests into a wintry paradise. Birds are coming home to roost while woodland creatures scamper away for hibernation. In this exclusive autumn collection, Shen Zi Yao translates an aura of romantic melancholy into his frosty yet charming sceneries seamlessly. His ink paintings invite the viewers into a forbidden, intimate part of his world, an untouched beauty unperturbed by the outside world – enigmatic and endlessly breath-taking.
