Fast Forward

This show will be about works from young, up-and-coming Chinese artists born in the 80s. This is the first true generation that grew up in the new China, outside the shadow of Mao. Their worldview is shaped by a resurgent, internationalizing China. Fast Forward captures the rapidly transforming nature of Chinese ink through the lenses of this new generation of young artists.

Fast Forward explores the question of ‘what is contemporary Chinese art?’. In large part Chinese ink has receded from the global stage and has been seen to have failed to respond to the zeitgeist of Western contemporary art. Contemporary art critics and Chinese art historians see Chinese art rapidly coming to a crossroad – how can Chinese art develop into something that is distinctly Chinese, yet can have a relevant dialogue on the global stage of contemporary art? How can Chinese art contribute to that conversation? How can Chinese art break away from being a facsimile of Western contemporary art?

Fast Forward is a show about a group of 80s generation Chinese ink artists, belonging to a movement that is loosely termed ‘Modern Ink’. These Modern Ink artists present works that is capture the traditional atmosphere and spirit of Chinese ink but at the same time, this generation of artists reject the rules of style, composition and subject imposed by generations of masters and the strict Academic structure in China.
