Zhao Xiao Hai’s works are about light and movement. He is a recognized master of forest scenes, and the play of light observed through the dense leaves of the woodlands are one of his signature compositions. Working almost exclusively with black ink, Zhao leaves sparse, unpainted white space to create dramatic landscapes washed in shadows.
At first glance, Zhao’s ink-heavy creations are often mistaken for black and white photographs. Closer inspection reveals a complex weave of layers that convey an amazing sense of depth. His forest scenes make use of strong horizontal lines to create a tightly bound composition and harmonious visual cohesion, and he makes use of dynamic diagonal lines to create a sense of movement.
Zhao Xiao Hai was born in 1961, and he graduated from the Stage Department of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. He completed his postgraduate studies at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, under the tutelage of Professor Jia You Fu. Zhao Xiao Hai is currently the Vice-Dean of the College of the Arts of Hebei University.
