Maureen Hoon

Through abstraction, Maureen explores the borders between painting and sculpture and also examines the intersections between materiality, space, and image. In her ‘Reflections’ series, the imagery recalls water, sky and light, often interpreted as playful, dream-like and mysterious. She has carved out her own ideas of space and created a body of work that is a metaphorical journey of inner discovery and transformation. Maureen was born in Singapore but currently maintains her studio in New York City.

Maureen Hoon conceived her series of black abstract works in New York, 2012. She mixes pure pigments gathered from all over the world into her mixed media works, along with unexpected materials, including wood, textiles and discarded industrial materials. Layering multiple strata of paint, incorporating metal structures, embedding found materials into the canvas – are all part of the creative process. Often times, each work can take up to three months to a year – from its conception to its completion. Organic shapes and gestural lines are central in her works to assert a naturally cohesive form and allude to an origin that exists in its own right. Maureen’s art explores the in-between spaces of painting and sculpture and focuses on the endless possibilities for creative experimentation and freedom.

Philosphy for the Urbanite: The Art of Maureen Hoon

Published on Aug 28, 2014

For the busy, self-reliant New Yorker, there’s often not enough time in a day to get everything done, let alone to engage in a bit of introspection. Maureen Hoon is an artist who incorporates her urban environment into her abstract work, creating a space for New Yorkers to acknowledge that which they subconsciously internalize on a daily basis.
