Wang is a native of Beijing and his early art education in Chinese ink was with the Beijing School for the Arts and the China Art Research Institute. In 1988, he moved to Japan where he has continued to live and work for the past thirty years. A familiar face in Japan due to his regular NHK series on Chinese ink, Wang is also recognized for his large-scale compositions, some of which span over one hundred meters. Wang’s affection for his adopted country is evident in his Japanese series of women in kimono amidst the flutter of cherry blossoms. His ink technique is a synthesis of the fluid, free-form of Chinese ink and the controlled balance of Japanese ink technique. He infuses his works with an evocative atmosphere, as seen in his evocative street scenes of rainy days with light reflecting off wet pavement.
