Chisato Tanaka graduated from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 2005. In the following year, she began her professional career as an artist in Fukuoka, the southern metropolis of Japan. Recognizable by her reticent expressions on children’s faces, Tanaka’s oeuvre captures those unknowing moments in life when the reservation and pensiveness of adulthood overtake the fearlessness and innocence of childhood. The contrast of vibrant oil paints against pitch-black acrylic backgrounds reinforces the uncanniness of the subjects in her paintings. Today, Tanaka is one of the leading artists in Fukuoka, with a sizeable collector base and multiple collaborations with esteemed companies.
