Yang Xiao 杨潇

Yang Xiao’s paintings are about metaphorical journeys. Lonely roads wind their way through a quiet, serene landscape, dotted by occasionally with deer galloping in the distance, but always devoid of people. His paintings suggest the journey of our minds and soul through a space that allows us to be reflective. Through the use of simple lines and his motif of a long-winding road, the artist creates a sense of immense space in his works.

Yang Xiao’s works capture the quintessential atmosphere and focus on inner spirit that is the hallmark of the great masters of Chinese ink. Yet his composition, technique and subject sets him apart as a contemporary Modern Ink artist. His works have a Japanese influence, fuelled by a lifetime of interest in Japanese art. At the same time, he employs an unusual palette of colours, to the extent that the ‘traditional’ black ink is rarely obvious in his paintings.
