What are the qualities that make a person, an object, a setting, or an experience glamorous? What is it that creates that pleasurable pang of desire—the feeling of “if only”? If only I could wear those clothes, belong to that group, drive that car, live in that house, be (or be with) that person? By embodying the promise of a different and better self in upbeat circumstances, glamour stokes ambition and nurtures hope, even as it fosters sometimes-dangerous illusions. These are the themes that Amber Lu seeks to compose and examine in her art.

Amber’s outlandish handbags and other hyper-real symbols of high fashion are a commentary about the fuzzy line between glitz and glamour. A pair of colourless stilettos set against a psychedelic backdrop suggests the efforts at representing ourselves distinctly through fashion results in mass convergence rather than differentiation.

Glamour is a seductive cultural force. Its magic stretches beyond the stereotypical spheres of fashion or film, influencing our decisions about what to buy, where to live; it has become much more than just style or a personal quality but a phenomenon that reveals our inner lives and shapes our decisions, large and small.

1. The Seductive Power of Glamour

In an upcoming series, one of Amber Lu’s creations is a canvas with a highly polished steel metal sheet that reflects like a mirror. The piece, titled ‘Mirror Mirror On the Wall’ deliberately distorts the reflected image.

2. Painstakingly Crafted Background and Design
One of the hallmarks of Amber Lu’s artwork is the careful attention to detail applied to the background of each painting. Done entirely by hand with oil on canvas, the vibrantly coloured background exudes energy and vivacity.

3. The Artist Creates Physical Models
The artist also spends a considerable amount of time designing the fashion accoutrements that she paints in her artwork. In the process of creating these physical models, she starts to consider how the item fits into the painting and the overall theme and direction for the subject matter of the painting.
